Quadriceps Tendonitis

Quadriceps tendonitis is inflammation or irritation of the tendon connecting the quadriceps muscles to the top of the kneecap. This tendon plays a critical role in straightening the knee and absorbing forces during daily and athletic activities.
It commonly occurs in athletes who perform repetitive movements such as running, jumping, or squatting. Poor biomechanics, tight muscles, or overuse can increase the risk of developing tendonitis.
Early treatment is important to prevent worsening pain or potential tendon rupture.

Symptoms

  • Pain above the kneecap, often during activity
  • Swelling near the quadriceps tendon
  • Stiffness in the knee
  • Pain during running, jumping, or squatting

Symptoms usually worsen with continued activity and improve with rest.

Treatment

  • Rest from aggravating activities
  • Physical therapy to improve strength and flexibility
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Ice therapy
  • Gradual return to sports and activity

Surgical intervention is rare and typically reserved for severe chronic cases or tendon rupture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Quadriceps Tendonitis

Repetitive stress from running, jumping, or squatting, along with tight or weak muscles, contributes to tendon irritation.

Rest, physical therapy, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and gradual return to activity are the mainstays of treatment.

If untreated or in severe cases, chronic tendon inflammation may increase the risk of tendon rupture

Most patients improve within a few weeks to months with consistent rehabilitation.
