In the spring of 2018 I found myself laying on a makeshift table, under a corrugated roof, in a Honduran hospital emergency room. My leg was snapped in two, and the insides of my broken bones were exposed to the gritty environs of the port city’s tropical barrio. During the following weeks I underwent three surgeries, while two roommates in our 9-bed I.C.U. died from sepsis. Resources were limited, and to survive it was necessary to source vital goods such as scalpels, sutures, antibiotics, blood-thinners, toilet paper, and food. Meanwhile, as circumstances became increasingly critical, a group of friends from around the world researched potential places with better medical care, and ways to get me there. As a dual-citizen of the European Union and USA, I considered options in Poland, Norway, the United Kingdom, New York, Boston, and California. After much research and deliberation among a diverse group of highly educated and well-traveled people, it was determined that my best option would be the trauma unit at Oakland’s Highland Hospital, if I could make it there. Dr. Krosin introduced himself as he looked at my chart, and simultaneously tended to other patients on nearby beds. He heard everyone, and responded thoughtfully. We all felt considered and cared for. Without airs, and with deference to his colleagues, Dr. Krosin listened and fiddled and conversed, and let me know what was what. Each of us patients learned the real deal, and were spoken to with the nuances that suited each of us individually. During my first surgery in the U.S., Dr. Krosin removed the infected Tegucigalpan stainless steel hardware that threatened amputation, and replaced it with titanium. Dr. Krosin also repositioned my tibia, fibula, and talus to help me walk and protect me from severe arthritis and other complications. For weeks we observed blood lab work, and I was put on a PICC-line that delivered the strongest antibiotics available in the USA straight to my heart. When I was released from Highland Hospital, Dr. Krosin gave me a direct line to contact him in case of emergencies. I called upon him, and he always responded. Eventually I was provided a General Caregiving Practitioner through the same California State provided Medi-Cal system, and Dr. Krosin continues to respond to all my calls promptly and considerately. I cannot exaggerate my appreciation and respect for Dr. Krosin, who truly embodies the Hippocratic Oath.
